What We Do

Professional Development for Good (PD4G) and Conserveration Masterminds strengthen the capacity of conservation professionals and organizations dedicated to protecting wildlife. Led by Dr. Sylvia Atsalis, Professional Development for Good supports emerging conservation leaders by consulting, advising, and training NGO teams to strengthen their ability to deliver conservation outcomes.

Technical expertise alone does not build leaders, or deliver mission-level conservation impact. Through individualized mentorship, Dr. Atsalis helps conservation professionals build the confidence, strategic thinking, and communication skills needed to drive effective conservation efforts. Trained as a wildlife ecologist with extensive field and research experience, she integrates scientific thinking with a neuroscience-informed, strengths-based mentorship approach.

Conservation organizations in biodiversity-rich regions often stop at technical training, missing the impact that leadership and decision-making capacity have on real-world conservation outcomes.

About the Conservation Masterminds Program

Conservation Mastermindsis a nonprofit program committed to guiding rising stars in conservation, the environment, and sustainability through personalized mentorship. A free 4-month program, it provides individualized and group training focused on leadership, emotional intelligence, and strategic communication. These are skills essential for engaging communities, securing funding, and leading conservation initiatives.

Participants develop confidence grounded in self- and social awareness, strengthen decision-making, and learn to influence outcomes through clear and effective communication.

Technical expertise alone does not build leaders, or deliver conservation impact.

How We Protect Lemurs and Other Wildlife

Professional Development for Good and Conservation Mastermindsย  empower NGO teams and emerging conservation leaders in high-biodiversity regions like Madagascar. These programs protect lemurs and other wildlife by strengthening the leadership and professional capacity of those working directly in conservation.

By equipping them with essential professional skills, participants become more effective at securing funding, engaging communities, and implementing conservation initiatives. This enables conservation professionals to act more effectively and independently in complex, real-world environments.
Many mentees work for organizations directly involved in lemur conservation. Currently, Conservation Masterminds includes 60+ mentees from eight countries, with 20+ conservation professionals in Madagascar working with many organizations in Madagascar including:

  • Wildlife Conservation Society
  • Parc Botanique et Zoologique de Tsimbazaza
  • Lemur Conservation Foundation
  • Centre ValBio
  • Fanamby
  • School Garden
  • Lemur Love
  • Duke Lemur Center SAVA Conservation
  • The University of Toamasina, and
  • The SAVA Regional Tourism Office.

Others are students at the Universitรฉ Rรฉgionale Androy and the University of Antananarivo.

Following the International Primatological Congress 2025, I organized a ๐—ฑ๐—ฎ๐˜†๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ด ๐—Ÿ๐—ฒ๐—ฎ๐—ฑ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ถ๐—ฝ ๐—ช๐—ผ๐—ฟ๐—ธ๐˜€๐—ต๐—ผ๐—ฝ for local members of my global professional development and mentorship program, Conservation Masterminds. These rising leaders from biodiversity-rich nations are driving science, advocacy, community engagement, and policy to address todayโ€™s most urgent environmental challenges. The workshop focused on building power through positive impact and expanded networks, and on using social media as a strategic tool to spotlight their conservation work.

How We Support Local Communities

Through education, capacity building, and mentorship, Professional Development for Good and Conservation Masterminds empower Malagasy professionals and Malagasy-led organizations to work effectively with local communities for greater conservation impact.
